What is CBD?
A plain-English guide to what CBD is, what the different labels mean, and how to choose a format that suits you.
The basics
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of many naturally occurring compounds found in the hemp plant. It is non-intoxicating, meaning it does not produce the “high” associated with THC.
In the UK, CBD is sold as a food supplement. It is not a medicine, and products sold as supplements cannot lawfully be marketed with medical claims.
Broad spectrum vs. full spectrum vs. isolate
| Type | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Full spectrum | CBD alongside the other naturally occurring compounds found in the plant, including terpenes. |
| Broad spectrum | A range of plant compounds, with THC removed or reduced to undetectable levels. |
| Isolate | CBD on its own, with other plant compounds removed. |
Every CBDBLOOM listing states its spectrum clearly so you know what you are buying.
Reading the strength
Two numbers matter on any CBD product:
- Total CBD — the amount in the whole bottle or pack (e.g. 1000mg).
- CBD per serving — the amount in a single drop, pipette, gummy or capsule. This is the figure that tells you what you are actually taking.
A large total figure does not mean a strong serving, and vice versa — always check both.
Choosing a format
- Oils and drops — taken under the tongue. Let you adjust your serving precisely, drop by drop.
- Gummies — a fixed, pre-measured amount per sweet. Simple, portable and flavour-led.
There is no single “best” format — it comes down to whether you prefer precise control or convenience.
Before you start
Follow the dosage guidance supplied with your product and do not exceed the recommended daily intake. CBD is not suitable for everyone — please read our Age & Suitability page, and speak to a doctor or pharmacist if you take any medication.
Checking quality
Look for clear spectrum and strength labelling and independent lab testing. Our certificates of analysis are published on our Lab Reports page.
